Before he was appointed President and CEO, Dr. Uzzo was Chair of Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Department of Surgery and one of the principal architects of Fox Chase Cancer Center’s nationally recognized urology program. In addition, Dr. Uzzo has guided significant clinical growth through the integration and collaboration of Fox Chase Cancer Center with the Temple Health System.

“Dr. Uzzo is an internationally recognized urologic cancer surgeon and researcher with a proven track record of leadership success in the complex academic medical center setting, building innovative academic and research programs and strengthening clinical care,” said Michael A. Young, MHA, FACHE, President and CEO of Temple University Health System. “Respected by patients and colleagues alike, he is a compassionate leader who is uniquely qualified to guide Fox Chase’s success well into the future.”

Fellowship-trained in laparoscopic and robotic genitourinary cancer surgery, Dr. Uzzo is an expert in nerve-sparing, organ-sparing, and reconstructive organ surgery for men and women. "Preserving normal function is a sensitive issue that accompanies cancer surgery and has a physical and emotional impact on patients and their families," explains Dr. Uzzo.

As a researcher and innovator, Dr. Uzzo is renowned for urologic cancer advancements, serving as the primary investigator and co-investigator in numerous clinical trials. His focus is primarily on renal cell carcinoma, with a unique lens on clinical decision-making, surgical management, and adjuvant therapies. In addition, he is the developer of the R.E.N.A.L. Nephrometry Scoring System—the first and most widely used system to delineate the complexity of renal tumors and the impact of care.

Dr. Uzzo has lectured regionally, nationally, and internationally on kidney, prostate, bladder, and testicular cancer and has published more than 600 journal articles, textbook chapters and co-authored several books in urologic oncology. He has earned the great respect of his peers—recognized as a Philadelphia magazine Top Doctor since 2002.

Dr. Uzzo brings a fiery determination to 'double down on cancer' by advancing scientific discovery within the great institutions of Fox Chase Cancer Center and Temple Health and fostering collaboration with the best research minds worldwide. A discovery that ultimately delivers a cure for cancer and transforms how we live.
